Richard brings heart, humor, and 20 years’ experience of teaching 5Rhythms® movement meditation practice.

After working for years in Architecture, Richard discovered the 5Rhythms in London UK in 1996 during a period of crisis in his life. After starting to teach in 2000 (at Gabrielle’s suggestion*), he trained in 2000-2001. In London he taught open classes and workshops and a group of chronic fatigue sufferers. He has also taught on Buddhist & Quaker retreats, and in Lisbon & Melbourne.

Richard was a member of the 5Rhythms Teachers Association from its inception in 2006 until 2019 and he is also a member of the International Conscious Movement Teachers Association (ICMTA).

5Rhythms helped catalyze a dormant creativity in songwriting which recently reached fulfillment in the release of Richard’s first album “At The Mayflower Motel” (available as CD or as download on Bandcamp and Amazon). He is currently working on a follow-up album.

timthumb.phpRichard moved to Philadelphia PA in March 2008 and married Claire (whom he had met on the dance-floor in London). He taught widely in the city and New Jersey before relocating in 2012 to Baltimore MD.

He teaches in Baltimore, DC & Maryland.

*(In 2000, Richard’s teacher Sue Rickards needed to pass on the group of London Seniors she had begun five years before. Gabrielle suggested that Richard take it over, and he did so for seven years until leaving the UK. This video was made a year after Richard left.)

Richard says:

I did some counting recently and realized that I’ve been fortunate to have danced with over 70 different 5Rhythms teachers! Many have been ‘one-night stands’ of course, but I am blessed to have danced into life for over two decades with Sue Rickards in London and to have danced deeply with Susannah & Ya’Acov Darling Kahn (who now teach a separate practice, Movement Medicine, see also here ), and with Andrea Juhan and Kathy Altman (who now teach a separate practice, Open Floor) -and of course with Gabrielle Roth herself and her son Jonathan Horan.
